This elaborate and imaginative Victorian piece was recovered from a Rectory in the county of Cornwall, in the southwest area of England. The Victorian era was a very long one, and it coincided with the Machine Age, allowing tools to make ornamental decorations, with lots of parts, and allowing some very dramatic styles of furniture. This piece is an outstanding example. Made c1860,it is possible to see some traits of Greek Revival, Medieval ideas, Gothic design, Italinate, Eastlake, certainly shows the Aesthetic Movement, and more, all topped off with reeding, dental molding, gilt and paintings of flowers. Decorations were applied liberally and the result is a very colorful and interesting look! Overall, the bookcase is more of an art object than a practical piece of furniture. Original brass.
